How to determine carpet quality

Shopping for any flooring isn’t something we do often, but it is a major investment for your home. It’s easy to become distracted by the overwhelming variety of colors, patterns, and designs and, while you don't need to become an expert, there are some basic things you should know when shopping. For carpet flooring in Bowmanville, consider Decorama Flooring Bowmanville to be your one source shopping stop.

Many things determine the quality

We hear a lot of questions in our carpet showroom and they mostly pertain to quality. Don’t look at face weight only; heavier doesn’t necessarily mean better. Some rugs may look bulky and still weigh less or be too heavy. While weight isn’t a determination of quality, you might want to check the weight of two "like" carpets, for instance, two Berbers. Weights are usually printed on the back of the label; if one weighs less, ask why. Other terms to qualify quality are:
  • Density. This refers to how closely together the fibers are tufted and it may well be the biggest determination. You can easily check it yourself by bending back a sample card. If you see a lot of white space ask your flooring expert about it to see what this means specific to a particular rug.
  • Twist. This only pertains to high pile rugs, like the shag or frieze, and it shows durability. Twist refers to how many times the fiber is twisted per one-inch length, and it consists of a one to six rating system, but the frieze style has one as high as eight. The higher the number, the more durable and the less chance of unraveling.
  • Resiliency means the ability to bounce back to its original shape. Carpet flooring with nylon fibers is known for resiliency. This is also something you can check yourself. Press your hand on the rug. If it stays flat and doesn’t come back, it has a low resiliency.

If you can, take samples home

The lighting in a showroom is probably different from the lighting in your home. Sometimes people will find that the carpet looks a little different once it’s in their own home. Most carpet retailers will let you borrow samples before making your final decision. Walk around the room with it in both daylight and evening so you see how the color reacts in different lighting. You might also want to step on it to see how fast it bounces back.
